It is with great pleasure that I announce the publication of the book The Power of Mentorship and my chapter "If You're Not Appearing, You Are Disappearing" as a contributing author. It is an honor to be sharing the pages with my mentors Brian Tracy, Bob Proctor and Zig Ziglar!
This chapter extols the importance of increasing your internal visibility within your organization to build a stronger people and resource network. The most important emotional intelligent skill necessary for employment sustainability in the workplace today is your ability to build and maintain interpersonal relationships. Without the backing of your colleagues and superiors, you are just another number, another face in the sea of ambiguity.
Increasing your area of influence allows opportunities to find you. You will learn of 19 ways you can heighten your visibility through a strong internal network.

Excerpt from The Power of Mentorship - "If You're Not Appearing, You Are Disappearing"
- Find out the hobbies and out of office passions of your colleagues. Some people are involved in the most interesting personal activities that could lead you to a new adventure and a whole new group of people, ergo contacts and resources.
- Listen to audio book tapes and attend seminars, in house and externally, and share your learnings with your boss and colleagues.
- Offer to conduct in-house training sessions on a skill at which you excel. Offer to hold a workshop on a hobby or area of interest where you would teach others the likes of painting, guitar playing or yoga.
- Offer to be a guest speaker at a conference or seminar of your industry association. If speaking isn’t your bailiwick, offer to write an article for an internal or association newsletter. Offer to cover seminars at a conference, interview each presenter and write a synopsis of their presentation to be sent out to all conference attendees. Be sure to ask the publisher to include your photo where possible, but definitely a short by-line with your name, title and employer.
- Volunteer to work industry trade shows. Standing behind a booth at a trade show and circulating to other booths is pure high visibility. Be sure to look like a million dollars, be right up to date on the product or service being marketed and make a point of speaking to as many guests as you can.
- Attend whatever in house seminars you can. Aside from the professional development aspect of these workshops, meeting new people from various departments is fun and interesting, to say the least….and you never know who knows who.
When you enter a room, arrive early enough to introduce yourself to the speaker, and then sit close to someone in the audience that looks interesting to you. Sit either one or two seats to the right or left of them, or a row behind or in front. Take the initiative by chatting about the topic of the session or asking open ended questions about that person’s interest in attending the session. As the room fills up you can move closer to your new friend. Try to find a common ground as chit chat has a tendency to dwindle quite quickly. Exchange business cards or emails and promise to connect again after the session. The follow up is as important as the initial connection.
